Fenn Valley Meritage Vertical Tasting On March 7, 2010 a group of 12 met to evaluate the Fenn Valley Meritage ranging from the 2003 vintage to 2009 (pre-barrel aging tank sample). Overall, everyone was very impressed with all of the wines, including the 2003 Meritage. One taster commented that it was nice to see such good red wines coming out of Michigan. If you are lucky enough to have some of these in your cellar, here is what to expect. A brief description of each wine follows…
Color: Red with faint brick hues around the edge. Aroma: Nice cherry, black cherry, and plum. Taste: Chocolate, black fruit, plum. Good tannin structure. Finish: Long with firm tannins. Overall: Surprising fruit character with a solid finish. This wine can still withstand further aging.
Color: Red with no brick edges. Aroma: Cherry and plums. Red fruit character. Opened up on airing. Taste: Red fruit and healthy tannins. Firm acidity. Finish: Medium long, red fruit characters Overall: Good, well-integrated red fruit character with good tannin structure. This was the second most favorite of the flight.
Color: Dark red Aroma: Black fruits. Plums, black currants, black cherry. Heavy nose. Taste: Big tannins. Firm mouth feel. Plumy with black currants. Finish: Long and plumy. Overall: Complex fruit. The only wine in the flight with a noticeable bouquet.
Color: Bright red. Aroma: Red cherry, very slight plum. One taster noted that there is a “party going on”. Taste: Red fruit. Cherry, slight plum. Big tannin structure. Finish: Long with fruit-tannin finish. Overall: Complex. This was the overall favorite of the flight.
Color: Bright red Aroma: Chocolate with plums and cherries. A bit of black currant. Taste: Bright red fruit character with softer tannins. Finish: Long cherry and tannin finish. Overall: Simple fruit structure. Probably best suited for youthful consumption.
(Post barrel aged, but not bottled yet) Color: Red Aroma: Black fruit, plums, black currant, a little black cherry. Very fruity. Taste: Tannin, plums, and black cherries with a little black currant. Finish: Medium-long tannin and plum finish. Overall: “Smaller” than others due to its youth. Fruity but not overly large body and structure at this point.
(Pre-barrel tank sample) Color: Red with purple hues. Aroma: Plums, cherry, a little herbal note. All fruit. Taste: Plum, black cherry. Raw tannin. Finish: Black fruit, tannin. Long finish. |
